"Old Caroga Times" (1952)
Nestorest's First Snowman!
Pete and dad climbing to shovel off the ol' outhouse roof
Ralph, me (notice old toboggan) and dad. Those old steel shovels were 10 times heavier than the snow they shoveled! Think the little camp (behind me), at the time, was owned by the Jacobitz family. Then the Carr's, Tommy Maiello, and Henry Bozzi. His daughter Kathleen and her husband own it now. Here's just one story about the outhouse. I had come home in the dark from being at Sherman's all day and went to bed. In the middle of the night I REALLY got the bowel movement blues. You know what they're like. Its when you really gotta go, but wait until the last minute to get up, especially when you have to go all the way to the outhouse! Finally jumped out of bed, ran down the stairs and headed out the door. I was ready to explode and had it timed perfectly for the outhouse. It was pitch black, but we all knew where it was. To my amazement I couldn't find it! It wasn't there!! My father moved it, that afternoon, to the side of the camp! My "time" was about gone! Thought I was gonna die! Luckily, I found DeSantis' outhouse (Pat Irish's place now). Oh, what a relief it was!
Me in "front" (lakeside) of camp (1953) The overgrown lot was later cleared for a great view of the lake. Now its part of Frank Sherman's side yard. To the right of it was the Harmony Lodge. A tiny spring ran through the lot to the beach. We thought the yellowish color was from the soil. Found out later it was the same thing that made yellow snow. Yuk! |
