Swimming At Sherman's

Remember the terrific sandy bottom that went out from the shoreline almost 200 feet? I loved to dive in where the first dock is and swim over to Vrooman's when Fishbein had the concessions there. Have a soda (ten cents!), then dive back in and swim back to the dock.

Bob Hoffman and I were trolling with a large "kidney spoon" in one of Frank Sherman's rowboats, about 50 feet further out than the swimmers, one Saturday afternoon.  In fact there were even more swimmers than are shown in the picture. There's a "channel" (drop off) that goes almost to Hogan's camp just out of the swimming area that the fish cruise on their daily hunt for food. It would a been a lot easier if they just went over to Willies! :)

We hooked a MONSTROUS walleye. At first we thought we had snagged a log. As Bob pulled in the line, hand over hand, to free it he suddenly yelled "the line is moving"!

You could see the line going in slow circles at the back of the boat. We got a glimpse of the largest walleye I've ever seen before it finally broke loose after more than 15 minutes of two screaming kids fighting it.. Thought we were gonna go nuts as we watched this monster circling under the water. What a catch it would have been!
